First graders studied Jacob Lawrence and made paintings of their favorite places in town. We looked at how Lawrence documented his life through his work by painting what was around him. The students pointed out all the different 'things' they saw in each painting and discussed what they thought it might have been like to live there. |
As a class, we named places we liked to go in town, like our neighborhoods, Oak Grove School, Independence Grove, etc. We talked about composition and color; how to intentionally use color to highlight their important parts. I encouraged them to draw things they saw around them and to include a lot of details.
