First graders learned the word abstract: something that is not realistic, or does not depict a person, place, or thing. We learned that abstract art often uses unusual and geometric lines and shapes, and bold, bright colors.
I demonstrated how to divide up the paper in an interesting way using line and shape to create a nice composition. Students were encouraged to be creative in their own design. They used oil pastel, white colored pencils, and black paper to create an abstract picture.

- White colored pencils were used to fill their paper with line and shape, creating interesting spaces.
- Students then used oil pastel to create designs within their spaces and shapes.
- Filling with lines, patterns, colors, etc.
- Throughout the process, we stopped to look at our work, decide what could be fixed, made better, added, etc.
