It is the time of year every student gets most excited for... Clay! Every year the kids are more and more amped to get work with clay.
In second grade we make a slump bowl. A slump bowl is where you take a slab (slice) of clay. Roll it out to the desired thickness, cut a circle and then slump the clay into a pre-fab bowl (we use styrofoam bowls). It's a pretty simple process, but clay is very picky... it only likes to be treated certain ways, so we spend a lot of time making sure we are following the steps properly. We used texture rollers as well as crocheted doilies to create designs on the inside and outside of the bowls. Students were also able to make a wavy edge after the clay was slumped. After Parent-Teacher conferences the bowls will be out of the kiln and ready to be glazed!
